The Hong Kong Polytechnic University recently announced that, after more than a year of development, it has successfully developed the world's first "soft retail mannequin." This invention not only accurately tests and demonstrates the comfort of women's underwear, but also facilitates the development of compression garments for medical use and can be used for educational purposes. According to Yu Yongwen, Associate Professor of Textiles and Clothing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, who led the research and development, the Yu Soft Mannequin has three key features: 1. The outer layer of the retail mannequin is made of polyurethane sponge, simulating the texture of the human body; 2. The surface is covered with a smooth, skin-like fabric that simulates female flesh; 3. The retail mannequin has a built-in skeleton designed according to the human body retail mannequin, including the sternum, spine, pelvis, and thigh bones. Another feature of the retail mannequin is a pair of artificial silicone breasts that can be adjusted to suit design needs. Yu Wing-man explained that hiring real retail mannequins is expensive and difficult to schedule for fittings, and that women's bust sizes can fluctuate due to hormonal changes. Traditional plastic retail mannequins are stiff and easily damaged. Furthermore, human skin is elastic, so these "retail mannequins" often fail to demonstrate the shaping and tightness of underwear. Soft retail mannequins, however, can overcome these issues. Researchers are continuing to refine the soft retail mannequins, including by adding ultra-thin pressure sensors at the waistband and underbust to collect more objective and reliable data to aid in underwear design.
